If there’s anything that scrapbookers have in common beyond creating scrapbooks, it’s scrapbook paper. It’s our biggest weakness. Finding that unique pattern or those luscious colors is a real treat. So we buy the paper today and assume the inspiration will follow later. Then the wonderful new paper lies wasted for months waiting for that right inspirational moment. Read the rest of this entry »

What is a good (decent) die cutting machine to cut wool felt?

ARe you talking about a scrapbooking die cut machine? The only one that is going to cut wool felt is the Sizzix machine. You will have to put something under the wool to make it stable. I have cut basal wood out with my Sizzix machine, and cotton fabric.
I have seen it 30/40% off at JoAnn fabrics. The Big Kick and the Big Shot are the same machine, different colors.

The scrapbook industry has exploded making more and more tools that help you turn your pictures into works of arts that save your memories for the rest of your life.

As a scrapbooker there are a few tools that you should have to help you create the simplest to the most advanced Scrapbook pages you have ever seen. In your basic bag you should have tools for journaling, adhering your pictures and elements, paper, embellishment and a cropping tool. As you become more vested in the scrapbooking craft you can add more advanced tools such as die cutting tools.

The point of scrapbooking is to tell a story about the event that led to the picture. Journaling is an element of every page. To properly journal you should pick out markers or pens that are acid free. They should be archival quality. Pens and markers come in many colors that will coordinate with your pages. Be sure to check the tips. Some markers are for coloring and are less effective as writing instruments.

Adhesives. Adhesives should be acid free and archival quality as well. Office tape or glue can damage your photos and yellow your pages. A tape runner would be a good basic tool for a beginning scrapbooker. Tape runners can be refilled or throw away. You should check your tape runner can come with strips, dots or wider bands. Your tape runner could also come with permanent or repositionable adhesive. If you are testing your page use repositionable. If you are happy with your design use permanent adhesive. For more advanced scrapbookers you can get adhesive machines that will turn paper or other thin materials into stickers. Adhesive machines can work with items up to one inch wide up to several inches wide. Again these machines can work with repositionable or permanent adhesives. Some of these machines will also work with magnetic mediums or act like laminators.

Cropping tools can be as simple as a set of scissors or paper trimmers to circle and other shape cutters. A paper trimmer will help you crop your pictures by cutting out background areas that deter from the true meaning of the picture. Paper trimmers are also helpful for resizing your papers for mounting your pictures. Paper trimmers can cut straight lines, some can also come with extra blades to cut scallop and wavy edges.

Every scrapbooker will have a wide variety of pages. Card stock will be very useful. Card stock is a little heavier it is excellent for making cards and mounting pictures. Card stock will come in the most basic colors but will also come in patterned, textured, metallic and glittered. Papers are come in other weights and styles. You will also find vellum, lighter weight papers and mulberry and more. Paper come out every day in different weights and mediums. This is what makes scrapbooking so exciting because the limits are pushed everyday. Papers come in 12×12, 8×11 or 5×5 formats. Albums also come in similar dimensions so that your scrapbook pages will fit.

Embellishments include ribbons, eyelets, buttons, stickers, brads, chipboard and die cuts. Just about anything you can adhere to a page is an embellishment. The sky is the limit with elements. Some embellishments require additional tools. To work with eyelets you will need an eyelet setter and a hole punch. Die cuts can be purchased or you can use electronic machines like cricuts or manual machines like quick cuts to cut your own diet cuts. Manual and electronic die cutters are for the more advanced scrapbooker.

Need Help with question about a Circut Scrapbook Machine?

Can Xyron Adhesive Dot Transfer Sheets be used to cut cloth on Cricut Machines?

This is the information about the transfer sheets.

Uniform edge-to-edge adhesive for die and laser cuts. The adhesive is dot patterned and breaks appropriately so there are no glue strings hanging in cutout areas. The top mask with the glue from the cutout areas still intact can be set aside for later use. Dot pattern adhesive has a longer shelf life and does not yellow over time when applied to items. Acid free.
4 Sheets, 3.5″ x 4″
These samll sheets of adhesive are wonderful for adhering die cust, aplhabets, or other small items with odd shapes. They create instant stickers. Peel back the top layer of film and lay your die cut face up on the bottom layer. Pres the Top layer back down to spread adhesive on back of Die cut. Peel top layer and pick up die cut. Your die cut will have dots on backside and be permanetly adhered to your Project.

Layout has a very special place in creating a striking scrapbook. People who are fond of maintaining scrapbooks do everything to find out the perfect scrap booking layout. They search intensely on the internet and even pay a large amount of money to get the appropriate layout. If you are one of them who pay money for layouts then there is a better way to lighten the burden on your pockets. Instead of paying money for scrap booking layouts, you should take advantage of the free scrap booking layout options available online.

You will be quite impressed with the range of free scrap booking layout options available for you to print out or to use in your digital scrapbook. The trend of scrap booking has exploded into a very popular hobby and such facilities are catalyzing its process of popularity. Now there are many free scrap booking layout options that provide innovative layouts as never before.

Scrap booking really is all about the pictures, so perhaps the simplest way to lay out a scrapbook page is with a large photo as your centrepiece. It could be centred on the page with a border around it (use a paper border, stickers or even leave that space for your journaling). Or you could place the picture to one side, leaving more space for journaling or other artistic flourishes.

You could even put the picture on the page at an angle, so that the edges of the photo are trimmed off as they run off your scrapbook page. This gives an interesting look to a basic layout and leaves lots of room for other stuff on the page.

Sometimes one photo just doesn’t tell the story. Pages with two or three photos give you a lot more options for layout. You can stack the pictures in a column down one side of the page, leaving lots of space for die cuts, rubber stamps, colored paper and journaling. Or you can put them in a straight line along the top, bottom or centre of the page.

You could put the pictures in the corners (especially if you have four) and save the centre of the page for a jazzy title or a special keepsake. Or put one photo in a corner and the others in a row on a different part of the page. Stack them diagonally across the page, in a square or a circle. And, speaking of circles, remember that your photos don’t have to stay square. Cut them into circles, diamonds or triangles, or cut the edges with a fancy pinking shear that mimics the shape of the border on your page.

Go to the copy shop and get high-quality colour copies of your pictures, then cut out people, start stacking and gluing and see what comes out. Or cut your pictures like jigsaw puzzle pieces so that they all fit together on your page without overlap. You could even make a big picture look like a collage by giving it the puzzle piece treatment. Leave a little white space around each piece for extra whimsy.

A trip to the craft store will give you inspiration for different layouts. Looking at all the papers, stamps, stickers, die cuts, embellishments, pastels, gel pens and more will give you more ideas than you will ever have time to work with.

With the use of a free scrap booking layout, you will be able to create a number of fabulous Scrapbook pages. The biggest benefit of free scrap booking layout is that you are getting desired layout without paying any money for it. This free option not only makes everything easy but also encourages you to start new scrap booking projects. As it is easily available therefore more and more people are getting benefit from this. The only thing they need to do is to search for free scrap booking layouts and select the appropriate one. This can reduce the amount of time you spend on your scrap booking projects with significantly improving the quality of the finished project.

Family vacations to the beach are fun to scrapbook, especially if you own the Cricut Life’s a Beach cartridge. However, that is not all you can do with this crafty accessory from Provo Craft’s popular line of die cut machines.

Like the other cartridges from Provo Craft, the cutouts can be cut in a variety of sizes. For example, the Expression will allow you to make the turtles, sand castles, and Tiki font on this cartridge as little as a quarter inch tall, all the way up to 23-1/2 inches. This means that you can use it for more than just creating die cuts for your handmade cards and scrapbook layouts.

For example, beach themes are popular for children’s bedrooms. Using this cart and a stack of cuttable vinyl, you can easily make an eye catching wall mural for your son or daughter’s room in far less time than it would take to hand paint it. You can also use the vinyl to customize furniture pieces, such as headboards, mirrors, and desks.

If you do like to paint, you can also use the vinyl to create stencils, which you can then use to paint walls and more. Using fabric paint, you can even paint curtains and sheets, as well as t-shirts and other clothing accessories.

Of course, this cartridge is also perfect for paper crafting. Are you planning a Hawaiian themed birthday party? Using the Cricut Life’s a Beach cartridge, you can make custom invitations and decorations. After the party is over and your pictures are processed, use it to make die cuts for your scrapbook layouts. Along with the die cut shapes, the creative features available on this cart will let you create borders and titles for embellishing your layouts.

With a little imagination, there really is no limit to what you can create with the Cricut Life’s a Beach cartridge.

How should I design Scrapbook pages for Swing Dancing?

I have been swing dancing for almost a year now and have some wonderful shots, both group and dance floor shots that I want to make a scrapbook out of. I have some pictures that are of formal dresses and some that are just during lessons…I just don't know where to begin my backgrounds and embellishments…I also tend to journal a lot too so if I could find interesting quotes about Swing Dancing I would also like to do that as well. Can anyone suggest where to start with this? We don't do too much with the fifties style poodle skirts and things like that but I am open to all ideas currently. Thank-you.

Since Die Cutting Machines are all the rage at the moment in Scrapbooking, I thought I should review the Xyron Wishblade to see how it stacks up compared to some of its other popular electronic die cut machines, like the Cricut Expression and the Making Memories Slice. It is easy to see why scrapbooking die cut machines are so popular at the moment. They make a scrapbooker’s life so easy and can produce amazing results on your Scrapbook pages. The Cricut Machine, at the moment I would have to say is the leader in the computerized die cutting machine market. However there are other brands on the market, like the Xyron Wishblade, that I honestly think need to be considered as well.

However with the popularity of the the Cricut range of die cutting machines, like the Cricut Create, Cricut Expression and Cricut Personal, many people don’t both looking twice at other brands. However some of the lesser known brand names, like the Xyron, do have some wonderful features to offer, as long as you can handle not having the designer brand name.

The main issue with the Cricut range of die cut machines is that you have to be constantly buying new cartridges to have a good collection of fonts and shapes available to cut for your scrapbooking project. The initial outlay for the Cricut machine is reasonable, however each cricut cartridge costs around US$80, which adds up very quickly to become a costly scrapbooking addiction. Most likely you will get bored with one or two cricut cartridges of the same shapes and fonts, so you most likely would want to own around 10 cartridges. This is unfortunately out of the budget of many scrapbooking enthusiasts.

Now enter the Xyron Wishblade Cutter. The upfront cost of Xyron’s computerized die cutting machine is a touch more than the Cricut Die Cut Machine, however you can cut any freely downloadable true type font or clip art image that you can lay your hands on, from the internet. You are also able to swap files with other Wishblade users. Anything that is on your computer is also able to be cut. Due to this great feature, a big community of online wishblade users has sprung up, to take advantage of this useful machine.

So if you are serious about building a collection of fonts and shapes and you want lots of variety without the expense, then perhaps this is the better machine for you, as the ongoing costs of the wishblade for the wonderful variety it offers, is much less than the Cricut Die Cutting Machine.

However like all products in the scrapbooking market, there really is no perfect solution of course. The Xyron Wishblade is wonderful, as it cuts the same as the Cricut Machine in most cases, and is also much cheaper in the long run. However, it does have a major disadvantage. If you like to share your die cutting machine with your friends, or often attend large scrapbooking events and scrapbook days… the Xyron Wishblade unfortunately isn’t as portable as the Cricut Die Cut Machines. The Wishblade has to be hooked up to a computer to be used, as it relies on your computer memory storage for the range of fonts and shapes it can cut. So if you want to take your Wishblade with you, your computer has to come along too. Lets hope you have a laptop handy!

The Cricut Die Cut Machines on the other hand, do not need a computer, only the cartridges. So if it is portability you are after, perhaps the Xyron Wishblade won’t be your best choice for a scrapbooking die cutting machine. If it is variety at the right price you want, then take a serious look at the Xyron Wishblade.

A craft cutter machine is a very useful tool to make die cuts with different types of craft paper or cardstock. If you like making scrapbooks or other types of paper designs a craft cutter makes your work a lot easier. A machine like this makes shapes and fonts in a matter of seconds and the quality of the cuts are very precise and clean. Most of die cut machines you connect to your computer, just like a printer, but there are some cutters where you can do everything on the machine itself. For instance the Cricut Expression Personal Cutter is a good machine for that.

If you having a craft project with a lot of kids you can easily manage to make many different shapes your kids can participating to put together. The craft cutter comes in different sizes and features, so it’s all up to you how you will use it and what you are going to use it for. If you need it for small die cuts you can go for a small one like Cricut Personal Cutter that can cut from a range of 1 inch to 5 1/2 inches in size, with 1 inch increments. If you like to cut bigger sizes you can go for Cricut Create Cutter. This craft cutter can cut shapes from 1/4 inch up to 11 inches in size. On top of that you have the Cricut Expression Personal Cutter which can cut from 1/4 inch up to 23 1/2 inches in size.

Now, before you start making shapes and letters you need to have a cartridge for your machine. The cartridge has templates of shapes and fonts stored inside which you can cut out in different sizes. There are a lot of different cartridges out on the market and they contain unique themes you can explore further for designing your artwork. One that is popular nowadays is the Cricut Storybook Cartridge you can plug in to your craft cutter. The Cartridge is very popular for making baby memories book and family scrapbooks, but off course you can use it for whatever you feel fits best.

So how do you operate a craft cutter? Usually the basic features are the same on each model. The more advanced features you will find on the larger and higher priced craft cutters. So if you have a basic craft cutter you will have no problems to operate the larger ones since the functions are basically the same.

Each craft cutter uses mats which you put the paper on. You then attach the mat to the machine and you set size of the shape and the place on the paper you want to cut it. Depending on the machine you can do all the settings on your computer or on your craft cutter. The craft cutter can cut in different thickness of paper all up to 0.5 mm thick paper. If you want to be even more creative you can use cardstock in different colors. It’s a large supply of different colors and shapes so you can make incredible designs.

In the end I would just add my own experience with a craft cutter and that is it saves a lot of time for my scrapbook making and even though I was used to cut out with scissors and break a way knifes I’m nowhere near the accuracy of clean cuts than these machines do. It takes a bit time to learn the software and the machine in the beginning but it is easy to use and the learning curve is very easy so will enjoy and have fun even on your first project.

So good luck to all with your scrapbook and have fun!

Scrapbooking is the form of art of some would say therapy!! Of preserving memories for the generations to come, by collating photographs and memorabilia and placing them together with their story in an album.
